June 2011 Blog Statistics and Income Update

As I've said at Crystal Clear and How I Make Money Blogging, I want to blog full time by 2012. To reach that goal, I need a bunch of traffic on all of my blogs. Specifically, I'm aiming for 25,000 unique visitors a month at BFS by August 2011 and need to be making $30,000 a year total by 2012. I figured the best way to keep my eye on the prize is to hit monthly targets.

Between that and the fact there seems to be major interest in the subject, I started an update around the 1st of every month of my blogging stats and income generated. I'll also do a huge 1 year update at the beginning of every January.

Here were my goals for June 2011 followed by the results:

  • Alexa Ranking: 32,500 / 36,197  (creeping up)
  • Visits: 11,000 / 9090  (not quite there yet)
  • Unique Visitors: 8000 / 6458  (nope)
  • Pageviews: 18,000 / 16,607  (double nope)
  • RSS subscribers: 550 / 518  (triple nope)
  • Twitter followers: 600 / 590  (woot!)
  • Traffic breakdown: 4000 (2732) from Referring Sites, 2000 (1709) from Direct Traffic, 4500 (3788) from Search Engines, 500 (861) from Other
  • Blogging Income: $2000 / $5186.78  (HOLY BEJEEZUS BATMAN!!!)

Monthly Income Breakdown

  • Advertising: $2195.03
  • Writing (Staff Writing and Freelance Posts): $635
  • Blogging Services (Running advertising on other sites and freelance tasks): $2356.75

I pumped up my commenting in June on other sites, but the “myth” about lower traffic in summer months is dang true.  Oh well, I have you all, which makes me darn happy!!!  I'll continue commenting on at least 5 other blogs every week day from here on out.

As I said in My Blogging Target Number, I will blog full time as soon as I can CONSISTENTLY bring in $2500 a month or more. My husband and I agreed that “consistently” meant at least 4 months in a row at no less than $2000 a month and an average of $2500.  I brought in about $3750 in March 2011, $2150 April 2011, $2050 (cut it close) in May 2011, and now $5185 in June 2011!!!  That is an average of $3283 a month!

Seeing that I hit my goal about 6 months before I thought I would, we have reviewed the situation.  My husband is fine with me quitting now, but I want at least $10,000 in my blogging income account to ensure that I could cover slow months.  I am at $6500 right now.  I also want to see if my freelance income is as sustainable as I think it is while I focus on the best ways to make money from home.

So, as long as I make $3000 or more in July and again in August…I WILL BE QUITTING MY DAY JOB IN SEPTEMBER 2011!!!  If I can hit my $3000 targets, I will be self-employed by the time I go to the Financial Blogger Conference in Chicago!!!  WHOO-FREAKING-HOO!!!  You really should see the little dance I am doing right now – this here is fist pumping, butt-shaking, unadulterated happiness people!!!  I look like a crazy lady and I don't care!!!

My goals for June:

  • Alexa Ranking: 35,000
  • Visits: 11,000
  • Unique Visitors: 8000
  • Pageviews: 18,000
  • RSS subscribers: 550
  • Twitter followers: 650
  • Traffic breakdown: 4000 from Referring Sites, 2000 from Direct Traffic, 4500 from Search Engines, 500 from Other
  • Blogging Income: $3000

Any questions, comments, or advice?  I will be going into more detail on a regular basis at https://howimakemoneyblogging.com/, but feel free to ask anything you'd like at either site!!!

Wow. Your June earnings are amazing! (But I know how hard you have been working.) I would be very happy with your May earnings, so your June earnings are mind blowing!

From a loyal follower: Very well done. Hopefully I’ll get one of those comments on my blog one day as you pick up your commenting. Keep on inspiring the rest of us!

  6. 20 and Engaged

Again I’m super pumped, proud, and inspired by you Crystal! Question. For your freelancing, where do you find clients? Craigslist, Elance, referrals?

  7. Mary

Crystal, I’ve only started reading your blog a few months ago and I’m very impressed at how well you’re doing! Looks like you set a goal, created a well thought-out plan and are following through very nicely! Congrats!

  8. MoneyCone

I like the fact you are trying this out realistically *before* quitting your job! Very inspiring indeed!

  9. Jenna, Adaptu Community Manager

Congrats BFS! How have you gone about growing Twitter followers?

  10. Squirrelers

  12. Andy Hough

Congrats on the income. I haven’t added up my June income yet but I’m pretty sure it will be a record month, mostly because of your help. I hope we can both have a record month in July as well.

  13. Suba

That is an AWESOME income!! Congrats!

Question on the advertisements, do you generally contact the advertisers or let them contact and then negotiate (yours and for other bloggers)?

  14. Awesome month! So exciting that you’ll be able to achieve your dream so early, but that is a reflection of your hard work.

  15. charles

  16. Sunil from The Extra Money Blog

excellent – congratulations – way to work toward your dream and achieving it!

  17. Crystal @ BFS

    @Lisa, thank you!!!

@Melissa, I was dang amazed too!

@cashflowmantra, I am glad you pick up on it! I am so excited!!!

    @Niki, you are very kind.

@Money Beagle, I will correct that commenting gaff for sure. 😉

@20 and Engaged, my clients have found me mostly through the Yakezie network and word of mouth.

@Mary, thank you! I didn’t have a real plan until October, so it’s been awesome to figure this out as I go. Thank you for finding me and sticking around!

@Moneycone, this was the only way I’d be comfortable taking the plunge, lol. I get into swimming pools the same way – slowly, hahaha.

@Jenna, I haven’t done much other than link to it at the Yakezie and on my own site in the sidebar and the weekly roundups.

    @Squirrelers, thank you.

@Hunter, I appreciate the well wishes!

@Andy, I am glad to help! Thanks for taking a chance on me!

@Suba, the advertisers come to either my blog or one of the ones I run and after a successful deal is made, I refer them to the rest of the group as well. And after all of those deals are made, I attempt to start a deal for the Yakezie.

@Kristia, thank you. It’s also a reflection on all of my supporters like you!

@charles, I will not give up. Thank you so much for the support.

    @Sunil, thanks!

  18. Khaleef @ Fat Guy Skinny Wallet

Hey Crystal, you are destroying your income numbers! Maybe you should start another blog about how you make money 😉

Oops, I see you already did! You are too much!

  19. Ashley @ Money Talks

You. Go. Girl!! You are rockin’ it and totally deserve it. You are the hardest working blogger in the world!

  20. Financial Samurai

Nice work Crystal! That’s a great income level!

May I ask how many hours a week you work on all the outside 9-to-5 job. Also, how do you allocate for taxes and such? Need some tips!

    Cheers, Sam

  21. Crystal @ BFS

    @Khaleef, hahaha.

@Ashley, thank you! I doubt it but thank you!!!

@Financial Samurai, I work for about 35-40 hours on online work outside of my day job and at least another 10 hours a week on blogging while I am at work (we get work in waves and then sit around to twiddle our thumbs…). I set aside an extra $50-$100 from my paychecks and another $400 a month in a tax account. When I work full time from home, I will be setting aside about 33% of my online profits to be on the safe side. Here’s my current routine until I quit my day job in September – https://howimakemoneyblogging.com/my-big-push-schedule/.

  22. Financial Samurai

Gotcha. Is that 35-40 hours a week or a month?

  23. Crystal @ BFS

@Sam, that is per week. Usually an hour in the morning, 2-3 during the day at least, and 4 or more in the evening. I’ve been sleeping from 11:30pm-6:30am and am usually blogging or working at my day job while I’m awake. I would guess I am never away from the computer for more than 2 hours a weekday or 5-6 hours on a weekend…

This is why I am quitting my day job soon. No one can keep going like this for too long. This is just my big push. 🙂

  24. Financial Samurai

Sounds good Crystal. I would definitely quit your day job with that kind of income vs. exiting income. It probably will continue to get higher if you do!

  25. Crystal @ BFS

@Sam, that’s the plan! 🙂 I will be able to be more efficient and can fit in even more money-making opportunities when I am doing this full time. The best part is that I think I can make even more AND stop working every hour of every day. I’ve already signed up to be trained for being a Meals on Wheels driver during a few lunches of a week. 🙂

  26. Crystal @ BFS

I’ll be self-employed by the time I hit the Financial Blogger Conference, woot!

  27. Robert @ The College Investor

That is awesome Crystal! I love hearing about people reaching their goals!

  28. Everyday Tips

You are doing so awesome. It is great how you made a goal, and have worked you as* off to achieve it. I think you could do anything you set your mind to!

  29. Invest It Wisely

    Hi BFS,

Just found this post through ETAT, but I’m not surprised. You have become a blogging empire all to yourself, and are amongst the most hard-working of all of us. You deserve it, and thanks for continuing to be an inspiration! 🙂

  30. Steve Cattell

Well done Crystal. Making over 5k with just about 10k visitors a month is an incredible feat. Hope it stays this way. Good Luck.

  31. The Financial Blogger

    Hey Crystal,

congrats on the huge number this month! You are working like crazy but at least, it pays off!

keep it up! you’re putting pressure on me 😉

  32. Furniture Stores Santa Monica

Wow! I might need to start a blog for an extra income.
