January 2011 Blog Statistics and Income Update

As I’ve been saying at Crystal Clear, I want to blog full time by 2012. To reach that goal, I need a bunch of traffic on all of my blogs. Specifically, I want 25,000 unique visitors a month at BFS by August 2011 and need to be making $25,000 a year total by 2012. I figured the best way to keep my eye on the prize is to hit monthly targets.

Between that and the fact there seems to be major interest in the subject, I started an update around the 1st of every month of my blogging stats and income generated. I’ll also do a huge 1 year update tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Here were my goals for January 2011 followed by the results:

  • Alexa Ranking: 42,000 / 39,036  (OH HECK YES!!!)

  • Visits*: 3000 / 3552  (Yay AGAIN!)

  • Unique Visitors*: 1200 / 1561  (And more WHOO-HOO!!!)

  • Pageviews*: 3600 / 4486  (I could kiss you readers!!!)

  • RSS subscribers: 300 / 276  (I’m still super happy)

  • Twitter followers: 250 / 285  (WOOT again)

  • Traffic breakdown*: 1500 (actually 1944) from Referring Sites, 900 (1345) from Direct Traffic, 600 (263)  from Search Engines

  • Blogging Income:  $1000 / $895.12

Monthly Income Breakdown

  • Advertising: $795.12
  • Freelance Writing:  $100

*UPDATE:  All of my Google Analytics numbers may be wrong.  I installed the code incorrectly a year ago and it seems I actually have more traffic than I thought.  I only had it installed on my home page.  Oops.  I really stink at the technical aspect of blogging…oh well, it’s a happy oops at least!

Anyway, this means that my “Visitors”, “Unique Visitors”, “Pageviews”, and “Traffic” breakdowns are all probably wrong (lower than they really are).  Sorry.  I’ll be sure to let you know my true numbers on March 1st!

My goals for February:

  • Alexa Ranking: 38,000
  • Visits: 4000
  • Unique Visitors: 1750
  • Pageviews: 5000
  • RSS subscribers: 300
  • Twitter followers: 300
  • Traffic breakdown: 2100 from Referring Sites, 1550 from Direct Traffic, 350 from Search Engines
  • Blogging Income:  $1000

Any questions, comments, or advice?

    Nice job with the site Crystal! $895/month is nothing to scoff at, that’s awesome! I hope to learn from you and do the same thing within the next few months.

  2. Molly On Money

    Do you use feedburner to collect your data regarding visitors or something else?
    What exactly are site ads?

  3. Money Beagle

    That’s cool. I wish I could figure out how to get my Alexa ranking higher. I’m getting around 60% of the traffic that you are buy my Alexa ranking sticks down in the 300,000s. It seems like it should be moving up as well as my traffic does, but it hasn’t been so far. Wonder if it’s something about Blogger.

  4. Sustainable PF

    I should track this stuff too. But i’d feel like a copy cat.
    We had a great 2nd month … 3092 visit, 12,637 page views, 11.9% bounce rate, 5:11 spent on the site, 2,082 unique visitors. No advertising $$ whatsoever aside from about $25 in adsense lol. Alexa is 144k about 10 weeks into our blog which we’re stoked about – it should help with ADs someday 🙂

    Love the updates BTFS – keep them up!

  5. laura

    Good income again this month Crystal..and your Alexa went up/down {?} to 38,563 today already!! 🙂

  6. Crystal @ BFS

    @LifeAndMyFinances, you’ll get there really soon! I sold my first ads about 3 months after I started and went up from there.

    @Molly on Money, I use Google Analytics for most of that data and Feedburner for the subscribers. I’m using “Site Ads” to refer to any ads on BFS other than Adsense.

    @Kristia, thank you!

    @Money Beagle, I get a ton of visits from Yakezie members and they all have the Alexa toolbar. I think my Alexa ranking is inflated thanks to that. 🙂

    @Sustainable PF, feel free to copy away! I only started posting my net worth because I like seeing it at My Open Wallet before I started blogging. I started posting my stats because I saw a few other bloggers post their annual stats and that seemed really interesting too. It’s definitely not my original idea, lol.

    You have some awesome numbers for a blog that’s less than 3 months old! Congrats!

    @laura, thanks for telling me! I didn’t notice my Alexa this morning, so that’s pretty dang cool!

  7. JT McGee

    You’ve got some serious monetization going on! Just 3,500 pageviews and roughly $800 in income is amazing. Keep it up!

  8. Melissa

    Congratulations! It looks like you are well on your way to your goals. On your other blogs, do you post an update as far as the progress you are making on those blogs?

  9. Crystal @ BFS

    @JT, yes, it is weird that rankings matters more to advertisers than traffic. If I was an advertiser, I would care more about how many people actually see my ad…

    @Melissa, thanks for the congrats!

    No, I’m not posting updates for my other blogs anymore since it is too depressing. Crystal Clear Thoughts gets about 10 visitors a day and Dog’s Life for Me gets between 1-5.

    My blog carnival, Totally Money, gets 50-60 submissions, but hardly any visitors to the actual site.

  10. DoNotWait

    Great job! Glad to read that! For the search engine traffic, maybe link your post with specific keywords without SEO competition would help. Sometimes, only writing the good words without changing your style makes a difference. I use Market Samurai for a month or two now and already saw a difference.

  11. Crystal @ BFS

    @DoNotWait, I’ve been using Traffic Travis once in a while…I just run out of time and energy towards the end of the day so I only SEO optimize once in a while. I’m actually currently looking to hire someone to go back through my 250 plus old posts and SEO optimize them for me…interested? 🙂

  12. IPA @ investmentpropertyasset.com

    Way to go! Increasing traffic each month is great and I like that you post this each month as it makes me go and look at my log files and Feedburner stats. Although I just launched my site last week and there isn’t much to look at now I want to get into the habit of checking so I can keep on top of what my future 😉 readers want.

  13. krantcents

    Congratulations! Monitoring your progress is the most important part of goal setting. It provides you an opportunity to adjust your efforts. I wish I had your numbers!

  14. retireby40

    Wow! Awesome job Crystal!

  15. Crystal @ BFS

    @IPA, the trick in the beginning is to ignore the stats and then watch them closely when you’re on solid ground and trying to grow, lol. I spent way too much time checking my stats those first few months. 🙂

    @krantcents, thanks! You’re growing too!

    @retireby40, thank you!

  16. Buck Inspire

    That’s some amazing stats, keep it up! 🙂 When you say rankings are more important do you see advertisers moving to mozRank yet? Is Alexa important or do they still focus on PageRank?

  17. BeatingTheIndex

    Very nice stats Crystal! You are doing a great job monetizing your traffic, congrats.

  18. Crystal @ BFS

    @Buck Inspire, a few advertisers judge on Moz, more than a few judge based on Alexa, and the rest are still PR crazy but I am slowly winning them over. I have a PR3 but a lot of great bloggers I know are overlooked, so I push Moz every time.

    @BeatingTheIndex, thanks!

  19. Squirrelers

    I always enjoy your update posts, and it’s great to see your success!

  20. Suba @ Wealth Informatics

    Awesome job on monetization Crystal! I wish I knew a way to attract advertisers 🙂

  21. Everyday Tips

    Ok, here are my thoughts:
    1. You are doing a fantastic job bringing money in for your blog.
    2. You energy is amazing
    3. I would redirect some of that energy. Your traffic would skyrocket if you could get more search engine traffic. I know you guest post and do a lot of writing, but I would direct as much effort toward getting that Search engine traffic. Your site has been around almost a year, and so there is a ton of posts for search engines to find. If you put a concerted effort toward getting your posts ‘out there’, your traffic will grow exponentially. Without search engine traffic, your goals will be much harder to hit, and you will have put in so much effort. In synopsis, I think you will get the biggest bang for your buck with search engine traffic.

  22. Mandi

    Wow, I absolutely love seeing your stats and how open you are. So transparent and it’s really great. I’m setting small goals for my blog and just letting things happen. I know the more effort you put into the better, so I’m hoping that with more energy in, more opportunities come to light and you are a great inspiration!

  23. Nicole

    Congrats!

  24. Sandy @ yesiamcheap

    You’re doing awesome on the blog income side. I mean really good! But then you already know that. 🙂

  25. Finanzas Personales

    Great, Crystal! You have every reason to be happy about your stats.
    Yesterday I was thinking in starting something like this for my site, which will be 6 months in a couple of days, but I’m still figuring out what should I aspire to. I’m inspired by your success and really hope things keep going on the fast track for BFS!!!

  26. Darwin's Money

    Nice work! Doesn’t it feel great making progress on goals month over month? The beautiful thing about web biz is the rapid growth. 10% monthly is totally achievable and may not sound like much, but annually? That’s over double the traffic/income annually. Nice dime after a couple years of hard work – geometric progression is incredible.

  27. Invest It Wisely

    Close to $1000 a month is very good! That is my goal but I’m still quite a ways off from there.

  28. Crystal @ BFS

    @Squirrelers, thanks!

    @Suba, are you on the Wisebread list of bloggers? Otehr than that, PR, Moz, and Alexa seems to be the biggest factors for me.

    @Everyday Tips, you are very right. I do need to concentrate on SEO more. Plus, thanks to your help, my traffic may be better than I thought, lol. Stupid Analytics codes… We’ll see in a day or two. 🙂

    @Mandi, sometimes just enjoying it really is the best thing!

    @Nicole, thanks!

    @Sandy, actually, I don’t know if I’m doing well comparably or not (one reason why I post it, lol), but thanks!

    @Finanzas, thank you so much for the boost! Congrats on 6 months!!!

    @Darwin’s Money, I hadn’t heard of “geometric progression” before, but you are so right! It is amazing how fast I’ve grown and hope to grow, lol. Thanks!

  29. Crystal @ BFS

    @Invest It Wisely, you’ll get there! Let me know how I can help. 🙂

  30. Thanks for posting!
    I started familymoneyvalues in mid-August 2010 and just earned my first dollar last week (from Amazon)! I’m still trying to figure out how to drive traffic to my site as well. I have lots of learning to do, but it is great fun!

    Any tips would be appreciated!

  31. Car Negotiation Coach

    Hey Crystal, Maybe you’ve already answered because you didn’t include it in your revenue, but do you get anything from your “donate” button on your homepage?

    I ask because I’m considering one myself.

  32. Yakezie

    Well done! Almost to $1,000 for January! Nice!

  33. The Saved Quarter

    So fantastic! I have no doubt that you’ll reach your goals for 2012!
