Gifts I Gave – Gift Ideas Part 1

Yes, I know, I am a personal finance blogger.  I know I am supposed to be frugal and non-materialistic.  But I also LOVE giving presents.  🙂  I’m starting a gift idea series since I do put a lot of time into my choices and these ideas may work for people you know too!  Here’s what I wrapped up this year:

1.  Mr. BFS (Gamer Geek) – The Container Game, Vasco de Gama, and Dominion: Prosperity (3 board games) and a super soft blanket.  He loved them all, lol.  🙂

2. Mom (Treky) – The Best of Star Trek: The Original Series dvd and The Best of Star Trek: The Next Generation dvd.  Of course I made sure that the Original Series included “Trouble with Tribbles” which is the absolute best.

3.  Dad (Football Fan) – NFL Texans Wheel Cover, Texans Propane Tank Cover, and Texans Grill Cover.  I think he liked these but my dad is hard to read.  We’ll see if his grill is all decked out next time I go over.

4.  College-Age Sister –  Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail, Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein dvd’s.  I didn’t know she had never seen Search for the Holy Grail!  Classic!

5.  Mid-teens Sister – The Host: A Novel by Stephenie Meyer, Switched by Amanda Hocking, and Artemis Fowl (Book 1) by Eoin Colfer.  Mom and sis were reading these just a few minutes after unwrapping them, so I think they were a hit.  🙂

6.  Hubby’s Grandpa (Secret Santa 1) – Canon Compact Photo Printer that doesn’t need a computer and hopefully comes with printer ink cartridges.  I really hope he likes this since he is such a fan of his digital camera yet avoids computers like the plague.

7.  Hubby’s Aunt (Secret Santa 2) – He Devil She Devil Martini Art Print by Michael Godard.  It wasn’t delivered in time for Christmas Day, but I’ll frame it as soon as it comes in and drive it over.  Hubby printed out a picture of it for her and she seems excited.

It was an awesome Christmas of seeing friends, family, and food!  Finding just the right gifts for everyone was just a bonus. Finding most of them at Amazon was an even bigger bonus since I didn’t have to deal with crowds, lol.  😉 And by the way I get Amazon gift cards through Survey Junkie which is a super easy survey site.

How did your Christmas or holiday go?

Nice gifts! My wife and I love giving gifts too and we actually managed to squeeze them into the budget!

My wife gifted me with a tent! We did some tenting this past weekend and it was great (luckily we live in South Florida and weren’t too cold)!

  2. Jonathan

Those are awesome gifts. 🙂 I especially like 2 and 4. Very thoughtful!

I got some white tshirts (which I really needed) and some tools from the father-in-law. Also included a really nice toolbox! I was pretty happy.

Those sound like some awesome gifts! I had a big christmas this year in terms of board games as well ( I got 4 new ones!) I hope you had a great holiday.

Giving is always a lot of fun! This year my wife made selected gifts which were very personal and appreciated. On the other side, our children got together to give us some really great gifts. We were really touched by their thoughts in the selection. The holidays were special for things other than gifts.

Looks like you bought some pretty great presents! I hope everyone enjoyed them.

My kids loved the Artemis Fowl series!

@LifeAndMyFinances, I’ve actually never been camping for real…I use to pitch a tent near my grandparents’ house in the woods, but I’d go in to shower, use the bathroom, to eat, and when I got bored lol. 🙂 Hope you enjoy your tent!

@Jonathan, a great toolbox and some tools are a fantastic gift, congrats! I had no idea until we needed them…

@Jeff, thanks! My holiday was pretty great! We ended up having a Christmas with my family at our house and another with hubby’s family at my in-law’s house. Good food and company…it was great. 🙂 The cashmere pullover and cardigan I got from Mr. BFS was pretty nice too, lol.

Which board games did you get?

@krantcents, I agree, the best things about the holidays usually don’t have anything to do with gifts. 🙂 My own favorite part was the walk in the rain with Mr. BFS to get chips and queso from a local restaurant the day after Christmas…

But as a personal finance blogger, I just wanted to do a link post to things I’ve actually bought, lol.

@Everyday Tips, I love the Artemis Fowl series too! There is just something awesome about a boy genius and fairies in the same book, lol. 🙂

I am stunned at the lack of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. How do you get to college without having watched that? We also own Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.

I agree that the Artemis Fowl series is awesome.

  9. Crystal @ BFS

@Nicole, I know! Happily, I have rectified that problem, hehehe.

  10. Jenna

Great gifts. I love Godard, he’s art is so funny. We do small gifts and then donate money to charity for Christmas. I went to Prague for Thanksgiving so I picked up my family’s presents there. For my mom, I got earrings from a local Czech artist and this garlic crusher (she loves to cook). My dad, I got bike socks from a local brewery and a Hard Rock pin (he’s a pinhead). And for my younger brother, I got the Russian stacking dolls but they were the starting line up of our local NBA team!

  11. Crystal @ BFS

@Jenna, those gifts sound awesome! It also reminds me that we need a garlic press, lol. 🙂

  12. Jenna

@BFS – I just found it online for you: https://www.amazon.com/Zak-Designs–Z-Rol-Garlic-Peeler/dp/B00004RDDP/ref=sr_1_5?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1293565504&sr=1-5

Very nice! I’ve read The Host and it was okay. Not too bad. But a lot of people didn’t like it. Let me know if your sister liked it.

  14. Squirrelers

I gave lots of gifts, but really didn’t receive any gifts. Purchased lots of kids gifts, and some clothes for grown ups. Felt good to give, especially when many of the gifts turned out to get such excited reactions!

  15. Crystal @ BFS

@Jenna, thanks! I’ll check it at home. 🙂

@Aloysa, I will ask next time I see her…last I saw, my mom had actually started it and my sister was reading Artemis Fowl, lol.

@Squirrelers, I do love the reactions!

I got awesome gifts but didn’t want my family or friends to feel like I was displaying the “winners”, lol. I loved all of them (cashmere tops, a Kindle, CASH, an emergency roadside kit with AAA membership, a cute Pug figurine, nice new clothes, nice new shoes, lotto tickets, etc).

Overall, this Christmas seemed more about giving for everybody, so we all were really happy. 🙂

  16. Jackie

Those sound like awesome gifts. (And I love that your mom is a Trekkie)

Our Christmas was nice. I think the most-appreciated gift I gave was a stuffed red Angry Bird.

  17. First Gen American

My favorite gift is one that I have yet to give to my cousin tomorrow. I have some video of my uncle before he died and I put it on a DVD for her. She has no other footage of him like this.

Great gifts. I have a feeling I’m going to OD on books again. I’ve been really good this past year at not buying them and then on a whim I went out and got the new bill bryson book..and paid full retail. I need a fix and I haven’t read the artimis foul books yet.

  18. Crystal @ BFS

@Jackie, now I have to go find a stuffed red angry bird…sounds cute!

@First Gen, my father in-law made a DVD of my husband from 0-6 and gave it to me this Christmas. It’s adorable. Your DVD sounds like a perfect gift to me! Maybe you can try your library for Artemis Fowl…

  19. Mike - Saving Money Today

Nice gifts! I like the old star trek episodes so I’d take that and the monty python/mel brooks selections would be good too. 🙂

The way you write make it truly easy to read. And the design you use, wow. It is a really decent combination. And I am wondering what is the name of the theme you use?
